David:

2014-2019: Cambridgeshire to Lincolnshire

I would like to begin this page with a special thank you to David for all information and assistance he provided, enabling me to discover the voyage this Volvo 850 had been on before coming into my possession, for answering questions and giving his consent to post the details online.

By September 2014 the Volvo had moved from Cambridgeshire to Boston, Lincolnshire and was now in the possession of David who cared for it until February 2019.

First job on David’s agenda was to have the Volvo MOT’d. Unfortunately it received its first FAIL at 17½ years old for 2x wiper blades, a side light bulb along with a cut in the tyre. The Volvo was fully serviced the next day, the faults rectified, an MOT pass was issued with an advisory for the front number plate and cracked tyre sidewall.

A second FAIL followed in 2015 for a loose battery and a number plate bulb. With the faults repaired it then passed with an advisory for the front number plate.

David had mentioned to me that when the car was left sitting unused for long periods of time the battery would eventually drain so he would often remove it to re-charge and must have forgotten to put the battery clamp back in place. The MOT garage secured the battery by drilling a hole in the battery tray and bolting in a bracket. I found the original battery clamp in the glovebox when I purchased the car and refitted it after removing the offending garage repair/bodge.

In September 2016 the Volvo was due an MOT, a change in plan meant the 850 wasn’t going to be used. David decided not to renew the MOT, instead he put the car on SORN and tucked it away in his garage at home where it stayed untouched until 2019.

After 22 years of being cared for by the same family David made the difficult decision that it was time to look for a new custodian for the Volvo. In his search to find the right person who would be ‘sympathetic to the cause’ of preserving the car for future generations to enjoy he contacted and sold the 850 to car dealer (Volvo specialist) David Stockton, Lytham St. Annes.
